McDonald’s Christmas Grinched

This Christmas, The Grinch is out to sabotage McDonald’s Christmas – it’s McDonald’s Christmas, “Grinched”! He’s infiltrating everything – The Menu, the app & he’s even released his own meal. Spanning multiple channels, our new campaign promotes The Grinch’s take-over with complete hand-drawn doodles and playful messaging.

The Tease

We teased the Grinch’s arrival across Organic Social, OOH and AV, showing a mysterious figure meddling with McDonald’s. First, the Grinch appeared surprisingly in a re-edited 30 second AV McDelivery spot during the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ launch show. The tease was then encored by a special build revealing The Grinch’s ‘Master Plan’, annotated with playful illustrations of the Grinch’s plans and “Grinched” McDonald’s menu items.

The Grinch Meal

Designed by The Grinch to appear ‘disgustingly good,’ The Grinch Meal includes either a Big Mac, 9 McNuggets or a McPlant and Grinched McShaker© Fries, choice of drink, and includes Grinch-themed odd socks. Other menu items outside of the meal include a Grumble Pie, a Mischief McFlurry and a Frozen Grinch lemonade. To bring this to life, we executed a special build OOH at Great Eastern Street in London, showing the Grinch knitting his life-size odd socks.

Custom Grinch Messaging

Throughout the campaign, we further amplified the Grinch’s sabotage with playful messaging such as “Grinched for adults”, “Disgustingly good” and “Grinch Approved”, supported by “Grinched” radio and in-restaurant and digital in-app promotions, where the Grinch is lowering prices and giving out daily deals to fans. Handwriting and doodles on the custom festive menu items and a full transformation of OOH, DOOH and print assets with the Grinch’s signature claw, were added for both a splash of personality and to enhance the effect of his takeover.
